“Set in the beautiful village of Portnahaven, this cosy and spacious cottage is a great base for exploring Islay. Even in winter, the house was lovely and warm, with the most amazing views of crashing waves, the lighthouse, and the many seals that visited the bay each day. Already planning a trip back to the island for the summer, and this would again be my first choice for accommodation. Hosts were lovely and straightforward too.”

Holiday Cottage on Islay

To me, Portnahaven is the most beautiful place on earth. And The Anchorage is its best kept secret. It holds so many happy childhood memories that I can't even begin to relate them.

Anyway, for now, I recommend you read the original description on AirBnB as this is a rewrite (don't get me started on why this is required for Google!) and not a very good one!

Are you looking for a holiday cottage in Islay near the beach with beautiful sea views, all within a walking distance of the cliffs, pier or sea. Welcome to Portnahaven. Portnahaven is a 2-storey holiday cottage in Islay's best-kept secret that was built centuries ago, but has been modernised to meet the specification and needs of today's holidaymaker. It is built on the island and next to an open sea where you can watch the sunset from the conservatory.

The Space

Portnahaven holiday cottage Islay is huddled around a sandy bay with amazing sights of seals coming out of the sea to bask on the rocks. Portnahaven cottage is generally proportioned contemporary holiday cottage in Islay, which makes a vacation in this place so impressive. A strolling distance to the sea, the sea view and surfing are some of the things that make it even more amazing. You can explore Islay’s wealth of wildlife, distillers, and beaches from the Portnahaven’s Anchorage.

The house has been around for the last 200 years and it’s been our family heritage for about a quarter of that. The Anchorage takes the centre stage in all Islay postcards because it is set in a picture-postcard spot where you can have a clear view of the beautiful Islay.

The Anchorage name came about as it is the last cottage in the village before you reach the pier where you have access to fresh seafood such as lobster and crabs. It has been used for different activities such as local headmaster’s house and it was at one time used as a school. Though different activities have gone on in there, it was modernised and recreated and become best holiday cottage in Islay.

Holiday Cottage in Portnahaven

The Anchorage floor plan encompasses of a twin bedroom and a spacious master ensuite upstairs with plenty of room to sleep and for storage. The living room has a double sofa bed and the windows are large and wide to make the sea view more spectacular from even inside the house. The large, wide window also helps in circulating fresh air from the sea into the home meaning you don’t need to go out to enjoy fresh air if you don’t want to.

The newly fitted underfloor heating system and the electric shower makes it even more appealing and warmer. The Anchorage has a sleek, stylish kitchen that flows into its country dining room that has a big table enough for holding a family feast. The living room screams ‘designer’ because it reflects the best quality design, finishes and a real fireplace that creates an electric atmosphere where you can create a relaxing place after a long day’s walk. The anchorage can fit any lifestyle, depending what you want.

Take a stroll around the Finlay’s rock that is to the east of the coast and explore the pebble beach at Claddach. While there, please grab some of their mouthwatering barbecues at curry sands. Or you can decide to go to the west where it brings you to a well where my family used to enjoy our drinking water from, but there is no need of getting water from there anymore as the cottage now has portable tapped water.

If you like coffee, then you know what I mean by awesome coffee? Not far from the anchorage, you will come across the Burnside Lodge. It offers awesome coffee and homemade cakes that come with a guarantee of satisfying your taste buds. Once your coffee craving is taken care of, you can walk off the cake down the coastal trail, through Port Wemyss and back into Portnahaven for a complete circuit.

In Portnahaven you can’t have much of the big city luxuries, but what makes it a perfect holiday place is that you can pick most of your daily needs from the local general stores and check your mails at the post office at the end of the bay. You can stroll across the bay and try the delicious crab claw salad at Tigh Seinnse or sample famous Islay seafood platter or stroll further to the Lochindaal Hotel in Port Charlotte and try on their different cuisines.

For many years, the Anchorage has been just like any other technological house somewhere on the beach show, however, using the latest technology, we have completely relented it and enhanced its beauty by installing WIFI, digital television, and telephone. Other things that we've installed includes dishwasher, electric heating system, tumble drier and washing machine. It has 3 car parking space which is just right outside the front door.

Embrace the spirit of doing it yourself with this original holiday cottage Islay. It's charming features and bright open living spaces make it a perfect place for a family holiday retreat. It's ideally positioned where you can enjoy the proximity to sea view.
